The Unit
Bristol is a thriving metropolitan city in the South West of England with a rich cultural history, beautiful surrounding countryside, and excellent transport links to London and Europe. Southmead Hospital (North Bristol NHS Trust) is an 800-bed Major Trauma Centre and a regional tertiary referral unit for complex joint replacement. The state-of-the-art Brunel Building has 24 operating theatres and our new dedicated elective surgical centre is due to open in 2025.
The Workload
NJR data for 2022-2023 show that over 550 primary THRs and over 110 revision THRs were carried out at NBT in the past 12 months, which is significantly above the national average. The Hip Team offers a regional referral service for complex hip/revision hip procedures, including infection and metastatic disease. We run a weekly MDT and a specialist prosthetic joint infection MDT/service. Over 75% of primary THRs at Southmead are performed by trainees.
The Fellowship
Fellows form an integral part of the team and will gain extensive experience in primary, complex primary, and revision hip replacement for all indications. We use a range of cemented and uncemented implants, enabling fellows to gain a breadth of experience. Fellows will spend four days per week in theatre and one day in clinic. Fellows are expected to participate on the on-call weekend rota, which gives them the opportunity to gain valuable MTC experience. The unit has a strong research background and links to the University of Bristol. Participation in a research project is encouraged. Fellows work with the following surgeons:
- Mr Richard Baker (hip/knee primary; hip/knee revision; hip resurfacing)
- Mr Sanchit Mehendale (hip/knee primary; hip revision; hip arthroscopy)
- Mr Jason Webb (hip primary/revision)
- Mr Steve Eastaugh-Waring (hip primary/revision; hip resurfacing; hip arthroscopy)
- Mr Niall Sullivan (hip primary/revision)
- Prof Mike Whitehouse (hip primary/revision)
